Excellence in Language Studies Award, Japanese
Student Name: Michael Flores
Major(s): Human Health, minor in Japanese
Bio: My name is Michael Flores, and I am from Charlotte, North Carolina. I am graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences with a major in Human Health and a minor in Japanese. I came to Emory intending to major in Environmental Science, but I became interested in public health during my sophomore year and declared my major in Human Health instead. My family is from Puerto Rico, so I have always been surrounded by both English and Spanish. I believe this multilingual exposure led me to develop a strong interest in foreign language and culture, and at the beginning of my junior year I began taking Japanese language courses out of sheer curiosity. During the summer following my junior year, I studied abroad in Hakodate, Japan and was able to enroll in Japanese 301 and 302 for my senior year. Next year I will be attending Rollins School of Public Health for their Health Policy & Management MPH program.
